All that lovers of medieval architecture in the old town have to do is ask for the tourist information office, which is located in the Gothic House, a unique, listed red-brick building from the 15th century.
Stone houses were a rarity in the Middle Ages, and only wealthy citizens could afford them. The Gothic House is one of the few in the region and also the oldest town house in Berlin. Particularly impressive is the original ribbed vaulting on the ground floor.
Was it textiles, grain or oil? No-one knows what the people who built the Gothic House traded in. The fact that it was a wealthy merchant family is evident from the building material and the location of the property, whose grounds used to stretch right to the Havel so that goods could be transported directly by water.
The tourist information office on the ground floor has details on Spandau’s highlights and insider tips. Here you can find maps, books, tour tips and plenty of souvenirs from Spandau and Berlin.
If you feel like searching for clues, visit the exhibition on living and building in Spandau, which is also housed there. Everyday objects such as kitchen utensils, toy theatres and furniture from different centuries tell the tale of times gone by.
